The Railway Inn at Ancaster has had a troubled history before the current owners took over.

What used to be a well used local for the  northern part of the village had suffered from the decline of the “local” and competition from the Ermine Way, Ancaster Sports and Social Club and Woodland  Waters.

The removal of the wall that separated the lounge  from the bar did nothing to bring the pub back to life.

Now The Railway is back on its feet again and doing well

Half of the pub has been turned into a Chinese restaurant and takeaway. So the former lounge area is now the restaurant section. And they seem to be making good progress with people coming back to the pub, eating in and a steady stream  of takeaway customers.

Although there is one room, the bar is located in the central area, so there is still a separation between the eating area and the rest of the pub which, complete with TV, continues to attract the locals.

The decor is unpretentious.

There were four in our group and we ordered  Chicken Chow Mein, Beef in Black Bean Sauce, Crispy Chilli Beef, Sliced Duck  with Cashew Nuts and two portions of Egg Fried Rice.

The portions were of a good size that satisfied  everyone. The Duck and Crispy Chilli Beef were especially good.

The food was typical of Chinese takeaway food, it was of good quality and the bill was pleasantly low. Where else could  four people eat out, sharing a main course for £20 (+ drinks)?
